What is B.E/B.Tech Biotechnology about?
Biotechnology is a highly interdisciplinary field that combines biological sciences with engineering technologies to manipulate living organisms and biological systems to produce products that useful to advances health care, medicine, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals and environment control. Biotechnology can be classified into two broad categories: R&D (research and development)in Biological Sciences and Industrial Processes.
- The aspect of biological sciences deals with research and development in areas such as Microbiology, Cell biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology etc. for understanding the occurrence and treatment of diseases, development of agriculture, food production, protection of the environment and many more. Most of the R&D work in biological sciences is carried out in the laboratory.
- The aspect of industrial processes deals with the production of drugs, vaccines, bio-fuels and pharmaceuticals on an industrial scale using biochemical processes and techniques.

Difference between B.Sc Biotechnology and B.E/B.Tech Biotechnology
A course very similar to this Engineering biotechnology branch is B.Sc. Biotechnology. The basic difference is the B.Tech/B.E Degrees are based on the knowledge of biology with more practical and technological aspect of the programme and the duration of the course is 4 years. On other hand, B.Sc degree will concentrate mainly on broad aspects of theory and the duration of the course is 3 years.
Of these two courses a B.E/B.Tech Biotechnology is better since it has professional and technical aspects of knowledge whereas, B.Sc Biotechnology is more general in content and you will need to follow it up with some post graduate qualifications in the area of your interests and strengths to build a successful career.
