B.E / B.Tech Civil Engineering

Hi all!

Today I am going to share the information about B.E / B.Tech Civil Engineering and its opportunities.

Civil Engineering is a oldest and professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment including works like bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geo-technical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering municipal or urban engineering, material engineering, coastal engineering, surveying and construction engineering.

Duration - 4 years

Eligibility
  • 10+2 Pass (PCM group/PCB- physics,chemistry & maths / biology)
  • Diploma in Civil  Engineering (Direct 2nd year Entry)
  • Entrance Exams: JEE (for IIT, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and SFTIs), BITSAT (for BITS)etc
  • An examination is also conducted by the Associate Membership of the institute of Engineers (AMIE),which enables working people in the public/private sector and diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering through distance education .The degree awarded is considered to be equivalent to a regular B.E degree.

Average fees - 2.5 lacs to 6 lacs for 4 years - May vary with private autonomous Institutions.

What is B.E/B.Tech Civil Engineering about?

The Civil Engineering course deals with planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, and operating infrastructures while protecting the public and environmental health as well as improving existing infrastructure. This course also teaches the development of better infrastructural facilities to sustain an eco-friendly environment.

Difference between B.E and B.Tech

Civil engineering is offered in both stream as B.E and B,Tech. One of the most commonly asked question by engineering aspirants is the difference between the two degrees.

B.Tech course is somewhat more practically intensive than the B.E course which is more theoretical. The difference  between the two degrees can be understood from their names itself, Engineering Vs. Technology.

Engineering is a "science", dealing more with theoretical concepts & principles; "technology" deals more with the application of these theories for practical purposes. But, both B.E. & B.Tech courses offered by various engineering colleges/ institutes, have similar curriculum more or less. Both degrees are valued equally by prospective employers. What matters more is the reputation of the engineering college from where you obtain your B.E/ B.Tech degree.

Who should opt for Civil engineering?

The candidate, who have the ability to analyze and interpret diverse, complex data with innovative and creative thinking and to evaluate designs, plans and projects;effective assessment and management of risks, resources and time are the more suitable one.

And also the person should have highly developed computer knowledge with good communication skills.

How is Civil Engineering different from Architecture

Architects and civil engineers work together for the most part. Architects are largely responsible for the design part of the structures. They are the ones who decide how the building should look like on the whole. Architects decide the shapes, floor plans, layouts, appearances, aesthetics, style while keeping in mind the functionality of the structure.

Meanwhile, civil engineers are responsible for analyzing and evaluating the proposed design for it’s safety and suitability with regards to the structure and materials used. Civil engineers come up with suggestions on what types of materials and building elements to be used for the proposed design and what modifications will be better suited for the structure on the whole.

To sum up, architects conceptualize the design of a structure while civil engineers make it a reality by undertaking and overseeing the development work for building the structure.

Scope of Civil Engineering

There is a wide range of scope in the field of civil engineering, but it is significant to be innovative and creative with the good knowledge of computer skills. Civil engineering is the very fast growing branch in India. Till the year 2020, 400,000 professional civil engineers are required for jobs in civil engineering sector but there are only 60,000 civil engineers are available.Government of India needs civil engineers in high amount but due to lack of civil engineers, many government projects are delaying to be complete.

However, exact numbers of civil engineering jobs will depend on a country’s construction needs, which indirectly depend on the economy.

Employment Area

Civil engineering is expected to be very popular because existing structures will require replacement. In this technologically advanced world, with population growing and infrastructure aging, civil engineers will expect to have a steady employment in the future as Civil Engineer,Tunnel Engineering,Water resources construction and management(public infrastructure),Engineering Transportation and teaching field in colleges are available in both public and private sectors.

Pay Scale

The salary depends on different factors like the size of the company you work in, the qualification you have, the experience, location of work, the size of the project, etc. The basic salary for a Civil Engineer graduate is 12 K to 30 K. The increase will be gradual as you get more experience and knowledge.
