Medicine - Course Categories

Hi all!

After a long gap, I am posting again! yeah I strucked up into some presentation works in Schools and other personal issues for a month...Today I am going to list you about the course categories of Medicine.

Medicine

Medicine is the science and practice of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.It is one of the best, reputed and respected professional fields in the world.

When we talk about Medical, an image of an MBBS rises in our mind.
Isn't it? But,there are various courses other than MBBS were available in the medical field.It offers Certificate courses,Diploma courses, Bachelor degree courses, Master degree courses and many short time knowledge booster courses for medical professionals.



Course Categories-Overview
There are 8 major groups of Degrees in Medical Science.

  • M.B.B.S.(Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)-Duration-5.5Years.
  • B.H.M.S.(Bachelor of Homeopathy Medicine and Surgery)-5.5 Years.
  • B.A.M.S.(Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery-5.5 Years.
  • B.S.M.S.(Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery)-5.5 Years.
  • B.U.M.S.(Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery)-5.5 Years.
  • B.N.Y.S.(Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Science)-5.5 Years.
  • B.D.S.(Bachelor of Dental Surgery)-4 Years.
  • B.V.Sc.(Bachelor of Veterinary Science)-5.5Years.

There are two basic categories in Medical Field- Medicine and Surgery.

Medicine-It is the practice of non-operative medicine.Most specialties in this area require preliminary training in Internal Medicine.

There are several subdisciplines of Internal Medicine.Some of these are

  • Cardiology
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatrics(old people healthcare)
  • Hematology
  • Hepatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Nephrology
  • Oncology
Practitioners of such specialities are referred to as Physician.

Surgery- It is the practice of operative medicine. Most sub-specialities in this area require preliminary training in General Surgery.A Surgeon decides when an operation is necessary and also treat many non-surgical cases,especially those in the surgical Intensive Care Unit(ICU) where issues of critical nature arise.

Surgery has many subspecilties.Some of these are-
  • General Surgery
  • Transplant Surgery
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Otalaryngology(diagnosis of ENT)
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Oncologic Surgery.

Other Specialties of Medical Field

Diagnostic Specialties -Pathology, Radiology, Neurophysiology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology and Immunology etc.

Interdisciplinary Specialties -General Practice, Bioethics, Biomedical Engineering, Sports Medicine, Veterinary Medicine,Wilderness Medicine etc.

Sub  Specialties-Ophthalmology, Dermatology. Emergency Medicine, Gynecology& Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry etc.


Admission

The candidates from Biology group in their +2 can appear in entrance exam for admission to the medical colleges of the country.

NEET(National Eligibility Entrance Test) is the only national level medical entrance test after 12th. Some universities like AIIMS & JIPMER conduct their own entrance examination.


Scope

Healthcare is the largest  industry showing the highest range of continuous growth always,due to the aging population and advancements of new diseases with curable Medicines.There are great  opportunities for  medical professionals to gain in terms of remuneration, research and working.But one thing have to keep in mind is that the Field of Medicine is a "Noble Profession"So be honest  and truthful to your service.
