Microbial Genetics Project - Guidance Info

Project is an essential component in a study especially for Master's course. It is a substantial piece of full-time independent work which occupies the final months of the course.

By doing a project, you will

  • Understand your subject better
  • Get practical experience
  • Chance to showcase your skills
  • Learn about team work, communication skills and responsibilities

am so happy to share this post of my Friend Dr USHA Subbiah who is a Principal Investigator in the department of Human Genetics Laboratory at Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital,Bharath University, Chennai, India.

To help out the students to getting their higher studies successfully, she started a guidance program for all minor and major projects in the field of Genetics including Ph.D.

Hope this will help you to do your projects as great success.

PROJECTS ON TECHNIQUES IN MICROBIAL GENETICS

About Human Genetics Laboratory

Human Genetics Laboratory is a part of central research facility in SBDCH is designed and
equipped to do fine molecular biology experiments. The laboratory is established by
Dr.ARVIND RAMANATHAN, a dentist and scientist by profession with several years of research
experience in Japan and Singapore.

Dr USHA Subbiah also an investigator gained a PhD in Genetics and Postdoctoral experience in Overseas (USA and Malaysia) and in India, and had teaching experience too.Research record in the form of 13 International Publications. We provide advanced training and research programs for all non-clinicians, clinicians and students of SBDCH and other colleges.

Research Specialization
  • Microbial Genetics: Genomic DNA, RNA, Plasmid and its curing analysis, Gene cloning,Protein expression and purification. Isolation and sensitivity assays of periodontal bacteria.Developing robust antibiotic resistance mobile genome (plasmid and integron) integration protocols for human pathogens.
  • Mutagenecity: Creation of Random mutations, Mutant Gene Library Creation
  • Molecular Biology: Drug- DNA and RNA/ Group I intron RNA interaction studies, in vitro transcription and gene expression analysis.

PROJECT TYPES
  • Academic projects as part of graduation / post graduation courses-for B.tech, M.tech, B.Sc., M.Sc., (Biotechnology Genetics, Zoology, Microbiology)students.
  • Research Projects for working Professional pharma /biotech companies, M.Phil, PhD scholars.

Duration: The duration of projects vary from 1 to 6 months (for minor projects) and 3 months to 10 month projects (major projects).

OVERVIEW

Human Genetics Unit offers a diverse range of research in genetics bound by the common thread of biomedical applications. As part of the Human Genetics unit, researchers will work amongst the very best scientists to produce original and distinctive globally leading research in oral and dental disease. The research areas fall into the categories from Microbial genetics to Human Genetics including genetics of microbial pathogens of human, mutation biology, cancer genetics, and the most recent genomics approaches related to dentistry. The candidate will be trained to fabricate their independent research outcome in atleast 3 International Journals with an impact factor greater than 2 before completing their PhD program. The Ph.D. Program in Human Genetics will enable Bharath University to become a key player in this explosion of knowledge, both nationally and internationally, by attracting and training the vibrant research scholars.

QUALIFICATION AND RECOGNITION AS SUPERVISOR
  • Degree (PhD) in Genetics, awarded by the University of Madras in November 2006.
  • Research record in the form of 13 International Publications
  • Postdoctoral experience in Overseas (USA and Malaysia) and in India, and few teaching experience too.

AREAS OF RESEARCH EXPERTISE
  • Genetics of Plasmid and Integron towards microbial resistance in exploring the resistance genes, Gene cloning, Protein expression and purification in bacterial pathogens from any source including dental caries and oraldisease etc.
  • Mutational analysis of desired genes Library Creation
  • Interaction of Nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) with small molecule in medicine.

PROGRAMME DETAILS
Students will pursue their PhD training for the first 2 years. During this time, they will complete the required methodology exam, PhD major work completion, submission of their synopsis will complete their PhD training. Journal club and seminar series will be scheduled every month. The final 3rd year will be offered to produce research publications, thesis drafting and completion in this course program.

Number of Candidates intake per annum - 5

Duration: Full Time - Minimum period of three years, Part Time - Minimum period of
four years.

Eligibility : Candidates with Masters Degree in the Faculties, including Biotech/Zoology/Genetics/ Dentistry/ Medicine/Pharmacy/ Nursing/ Allied Health Sciences/ Biomedical Sciences & Technology/ Physiotherapy. They should have at least 50% in their highest University examination, and who qualified in the GATE / JEST or UGC -/ CSIR - NET-JRF/ / ICMR - JRF / DBT-JRF/ INSPIRE-JRF will be an added advantage. No student shall be eligible for admission to the PhD Degree Course unless she/he has successfully completed a postgraduate degree
through an examination conducted by a University/Autonomous College.

ADVANTAGES OF GENETICS RESEARCH PROGRAM
The Human Genetics research program encompasses studies of the fundamental genetics
of oral biological phenomena related to the following aspects:
  • Improves understanding of genetic factors as well as genetic tests for susceptibility, lifestyle, and oral health risk factors allows a family dentist to offer effective preventive and treatment strategies for oral diseases.
  • Scientific knowledge about horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance in oral pathogens will prevent the administration of all the available higher generation of antibiotics to patients in the dental practice.
  • Provide novel diagnostic and therapeutic solutions to the most common oral problems.
  • Understand the impact of genetic disorders on the structural oral-facial anomalies.
  • Recognize genetic disorders can also provide a valuable service to their patients by proper referral to a medical geneticist and/or genetic counselor.
NOTE: Stipend will be provided for the candidates who register for PhD also.
